Finding the Perfect Perfume

Finding the Perfect Perfume
Today, most of us include perfume or cologne in our daily routine, a regular part of our presentation. Although we probably have a favorite or ‘signature’ fragrance, we don’t wear one scent exclusively. We have so many to choose from, and more added daily, we find it hard to limit ourselves to just one. We may have one we wear to work, and another for play, one for night and one for day, many scents are directly marketed for a specific season or mood, So it is easy to understand why most people own many scents to choose from each day. While we take this availability for granted, it is interesting to look at the process that the fragrance industry has endured to make this possible for us to just know that we like to apply the fragrance we love, to make ourselves feel attractive

Perfume was developed together with the first cosmetics, but they weren’t made to attract the opposite sex; they were made by the Egyptians to attract the goodwill of the gods. For many years, perfume use was restricted to the priests who performed the religious ceremonies, and also to the very wealthy. Eventually individuals who were rich and influential enough to have perfume, started to indulge in it more for personal reasons.
Even after the shift to personal use, the perfumes were so costly that their use was restricted to the very wealthy. It’s said that the Greeks were the first to make liquid perfume, using a mixture of fragrant powders and heavy oils – no alcohol. There was a decline in the usage of perfumes until the 12rh century when international trade routes opened up, the art of making perfume spread throughout the known world leading to it’s revival. As time went on the possession and use of perfume became a status symbol, a sign of prestige. Only those with money to spare could afford the expensive fragrances. Those who owned large amounts of fragrant oils were well respected.
At this time, perfumes were all very strong being made from mixtures of oil and crushed herbs or petals. Changing tastes and the development of modern chemistry laid the foundations of perfumery as we know it today, beginning with someone developing a distilling process making it possible to distract the oils from fragrances, creating a lighter scent, thus enabling a more affordable product. Interestingly, many of the popular fragrances today herald from true pioneers in the commercial perfume industry who strived to share their passion with the world. One of the most important players in this process was the French who brought another huge industry advance in the 18th century with the creation of eau de Cologne, which was a blend of rosemary, neroli, bergamot and lemon. The French have long enjoyed the reputation as producing the best perfumes in the world beginning with what has been labeled as the ‘costliest perfumes in the world’, Joy. Other note worthies are Guerlain’s Shalimar and Chanel No 5 which even today one of the most well known fragrances in the world. The United States is credited with starting the big launch explosion responsible when Revlon released Charlie in 1973.
Today, we have an almost endless variety of perfumes and colognes to choose from. Some favorites are still being launched from the designers who made their impact during the 70’s or 80’s like Calvin Klein Perfume, Christian Dior and Givenchy. Also worth mentioning are the signature scents being released almost weekly by celebrities including Paris Hilton Perfume and many others.
